Adidas F50 Adizero

Adidas’ F50 model family has been a success ever since it’s creation as a lightweight football boot, and the early signs are that the F50 Adizero will continue that success.

For the Adizero’s release, Adidas took every part of the boot and stripped it right back to basics to create the lightest boot ever. Lightness = speed, so if you need the quickest boot around then the Adizero could well be the boot for you. The upper of the boot is in something called sprintskin, a synthetic upper said to be thinner and lighter than similar synthetic uppers used on boots such as Nike’s Mercurial Vapor model.

Removed from the previous F50′s is the ‘Tunit’ stud layout which allowed you to change the studs on the boot to suit the conditions on any given pitch. In it’s place is a fixed stud layout, which depending on your choice is either for soft or firm ground. It’s a shame to lose the flexibility that the Tunit layout gave, but in it’s quest for lightness something had to give, and this was it.

With such a lightweight upper, you may think that the boot lacks strength, so Adidas have quashed any worries about that with a series of strengthening qualities in the boot. The sole of the boot gives it core strength, whilst running through the synthetic upper are internal support bands, so the boot keeps it shape under pressure. This will ensure that when you need the boot to deliver when you strike it towards goal that you will get a clean, powerful strike.

Adidas also offer the F50 Adizero in a leather upper model – so if you like the look of the Adizero but prefer the feel that a k-leather boot gives then that is the one you need. It isn’t as light as the synthetic upper, but that’s the price you have to pay!

In terms of colourways, the F50 Adizero isn’t generally a football boot for the traditionalist. There is one black with yellow highlights colourway, but it is the bright colours which really make up the bulk of the Adizero options. The most outlandish of these is the chameleon colourway, a purple and green ‘flip’ colourway which really stands out. The other popular colourway right now is the one you see in the picture above, the light blue ‘cyan’/white with pink studs, a boot for someone who likes people to see their boots from afar! The most recent recent colourway is the white and black with radiant pink laces and tongue. Again, a boot for the people who likes to stand out!

Overall, there is no doubt that the F50 Adizero will continue the success of the F50 family. With players such as David Villa and Lionel Messi wearing them, these boots are worn at the very top of the game which shows their class. They won’t suit everyone with their outlandish colourways and non-traditional colourways, but if that isn’t an issue for you and you want to skip past defenders like they don’t exist, then the F50 Adizero is a fine choice.

Puma Powercat Boots

Earlier this year Puma released a new model of boot, the Puma Powercat. Replacing the V-Konstrukt series of boots this model has found favour with a number of Premier League players who value a leather made boot such as England player Michael Carrick and Chelsea star Nicolas Anelka.

With the name Powercat, Puma are clearly targetting this boot in the “power” category, a difficult market given the current favourites are big hitters in the Adidas Predator X and the Nike Total90. However, if neither of those books do it for you then maybe the Puma Powercat is the one for you.

The power in this boot comes from the PowerGil Technology area, which is located on the top of the boot, exactly where you strike the ball when trying to give it your all! This technology essentially works by not absorbing the energy normally felt between boot and ball, but what it really equates to is that when you strike the ball, all of your energy will go into the ball and therefore your shots will be unstoppable!

The Powercar is made from K-leather and, as you would expect with this material, excellent touch and control is assured. An off center lace also help gives a clean striking area on the top of the boot so if you mis-hit the ball you won’t be able to blame the boot!

A number of colourways are already available and there should be something to suit everyone. The launch colourway was predominantly black, with a highlight of lime, which looked quite understated but still nice. That was then followed up by a white pair with blue highlighting, currently the pick of the colourways in our opinion. Puma then released a World Cup edition, one which won’t appeal to all – orange and black! The most recent colourway realeased is a black boot, with a red heal and highlighting, with a silver ‘Puma’ logo. This colourway looks pretty good, and would suit someone who plays in a red kit!

There are currently some very good deals on some of these colourways so if you like a classic k-leather boot feel that gives you the best chance of striking the ball hard or true then give the Puma Powercat a go!

Umbro recently revealed the new away kit for England for 2010-2012, and it looks pretty good as you can see from the picture below. Whilst not strictly the ‘away’ kit, as England seem to pick and choose which kit they wear when, and they will wear this for the first time next week against Egypt. Umbro have continued with the ‘tailored’ theme for this kit, a theme which gives this kit a real quality look and feel. A round neck and lack of collar also make this away kit stand apart from the home kit (apart from the colour of course!).

Over the last couple of years Adidas has used the knockout stages of the Champions League to release a new selection of colourways and 2010 is the same with new colourways released in both the Adidas Predator X and Adidas F50i models. Both of these can be pre-ordered now for delivery in March.

Adidas Predator X Champions League

The Adidas Predator X Champions League edition boot is a mainly blue coloured affair, with subtle hints of red and gold, all which help lead to a classy looking boot. These boots are available to pre-order now, and they will be sent to you once they are released in late March. The rest of the boot remains the same as the initial Predator X colourways, with the rubber silicon mix giving the swerve that Predator’s are known for, and the quality leather upper that top players demand giving this boots real quality. The second Adidas boot given the “Champions League” treatment is the successful and lightweight F50i tunit boots, and these look a bit more striking than the Predator X boot above, in that they are primarily (well, almost completely) bright red, with just a hint of gold. These boots certainly stand out on the pitch no matter what colour kit you play unless it it red from head to toe! Again, the boot remains the same technically as the previous F50i tunit colourways, so you still get the lightweight sprintskin upper, and tunit sole that allows you to place different studs in the sole depending on the ground on any particular day. Limited Edition Red Umbro Speciali Boots

To co-incide with Umbro releasing the new England away shirt for 2010 they have also released a special limited edition version of its top of the range football boot, the Speciali. These boots are released on the 3rd March, the same day that England will wear the new red kit for the first time.

John Terry, Darren Bent and Michael Owen are all wearers of the Umbro Speciali, but with only Terry in the current England thoughts whether or not we will see these boots in conjunction with the new kit we’re not sure just yet.

The Speciali is a very classical boot that is finding favour with a lot of professionals across the leagues who appreciate the quiet quality available in this boot. The Speciali Statement has a supersoft kangaroo leather forefoot and full grain leather body. On the outside of the boot, players are able to gather improved acceleration with the flexible sole plate that allows more movement in the foot, and there is a customised England crest on the sole plate.

If you have been watching Wayne Rooney scoring plenty of goals recently, you may well have noticed some striking new boots he’s been wearing whilst doing it – the new Nike Total90 Laser III! In the launch colourway of bright green, red and black these boots are easily noticed and a good way for Nike to draw attention to this brand new model.

The Laser III’s are a large leap forward from the previous model, no simple “change the colour and slightly update”, this is an all new model that looks and works very different. The biggest change is the repositioning of the “shot shield” which previously was right on the top of the boot, above the laces. The laces are now off-centred which gives room for the well shaped shot shield to sit both on the top of the boot and on the instep, where a lot of powerful shots are hit from. Nike’s designers and technical team put a lot of time, effort and money into making this the most powerful, accurate boot as is demanded by the people who wear the Laser III’s such as Rooney and Torres.

The shot shield pods act as one, and are made of memory foam, which both allow for a smooth and clean strike on the ball, which means more accuracy when striking the ball. These pods also have raised TPU fins which allow for greater friction on ball contact to delivery maximum swerve as well.

The Total90 Laser III is available in premium-grade Teijin synthetic leather, or premium leather for overall fit, comfort and performance.

Nike Mercurial Vapor Yellow / Gold

If you watched any football this weekend the chances are you saw a striking new colourway from the Nike Mercurial Vapor range – a (very) bright yellow and gold colourway. The professionals are wearing this brand new colourway ahead of its official launch date at the beginning of Jan 2010, but you can pre-order them now from Just Socca.

Gabby Agbonlahor was wearing this brand new colourway whilst scoring the winning goal against Man Utd this weekend, whilst over in Spain Zlatan Ibrahimovic and team mate Pedro wore them whilst helping Barcelona to a 1-0 win over Espanyol.
